The Paris Agreement on climate change entered into force in 2016 to limit global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius. As a response, the Government has initiated a Smart, Green and Resilient (SGR) City Strategy in the “Hong Kong 2030+” document, in which sustainable planning and urban design is being promoted as a key aspect to promote low-carbon smart living and enhance climate resilience.

It is the first time that Hong Kong will host a PLEA conference since 1981. PLEA (Passive and Low Energy Architecture) serves as a renowned international annual conference to discuss and promote the application of natural and innovation techniques for sustainable architecture and design.

As a high-density city with compact living, it is about time Hong Kong takes this opportunity to demonstrate how to achieve urban sustainability by the SGR Strategy, especially in terms of green buildings. The conference will showcase a number of green facilities through city tours.

With the theme “Smart and Healthy within the 2-degree Limit”, PLEA 2018 is expected to bring together about 200 researchers and professionals in the pursuit of a better and more sustainable urban environment.
