Project Title: Conservation action plan for Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) in Hong Kong: Assessment of threats and resource requirements

Applicant: Dr. Timothy C. BONEBRAKE, School of Biological Sciences, The University of Hong Kong

Total Approved Grant: $498,240

Duration: 1/4/2017 to 31/3/2019

Project Status/Remarks: On-going

Very little is known of the extant Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) population in Hong Kong as no systematic study has ever occurred on the species in the region, despite its Near Threatened IUCN status, status as a species of conservation importance in Hong Kong, and its being protected under local legislation. This study fill the information gaps by providing a comprehensive understanding of otter ecology in Hong Kong, including:

1. Investigate the habitat / resource use and potential threats to the otter population.

2. Establish the diet of Eurasian Otter in Hong Kong to understand resource requirements.

3. Determine the long-term viability of the otter population in the study area.

4. Deliver the findings of the study in peer reviewed publications.

5. Consolidate information from the overall Programme (including population dynamics and spatial organization) to develop a Conservation Action Plan for Eurasian Otter in Hong Kong.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes:
To be available upon completion of the project
