This project aims to develop a novel way to maximize the re-utilization of waste soda-lime silicate glass (glass beverage bottles) both as an alkali activated material and aggregates for producing alkali activated cement (AAC) mortar/concrete. The study will contribute to the environmental improvement and conservation of Hong Kong by recycling waste glass, and contributes to developing new technologies on glass waste recycling. Waste glass will be reused in two forms: (1) using waste glass powder to replace FA and GGBS in AAC, (2) using the waste glass cullet to replace natural aggregate to produce AAC mortar/concrete. It is anticipated that about 50% by mass of the developed AAC mortar/concrete will be constituted by waste glass.
