Project Title: Selection of wetland plants for wastewater treatment of persistent toxic substances by constructed wetlands in Hong Kong

Project Status/Remarks: On-going

This project aims to

1. investigate the relationship between the occurrence of pollutants (PAHs, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, NH4+, NO3−), and aquatic plant communities in local natural wetlands;

2. select the best aquatic plant species in removing pollutants (PAHs, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, NH4+, NO3−), which are also resistant to both invasive species (e.g. apple snail (Pomacea canaliculatas)) and fluctuation in water level; and

3. study the species-specific removal mechanism of the common pollutants found in river pollution and municipal wastewater (PAHs, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, NH4+, NO3−) via pilot-scale constructed wetlands experiments.
