Project Title: Field experiments on coral bioerosion

Applicant: Dr Jian-wen QIU, Hong Kong Baptist University

Total Approved Grant: $986,969

Duration: 1/6/2016 to 31/5/2018

Project Status/Remarks: On-going

Coral community development reflects the balance between coral erosion and growth. Such a balance has been disrupted by severe bioerosion at some localities in Hong Kong. The present project proposes to conduct field experiments to better understand the status and causes of coral bioerosion, and to provide information for better management of coral ecosystems in Hong Kong. Dead coral skeletons under two environmental gradients will be deployed to quantify changes in calcium carbonate (accretion vs. erosion) (continuation of a previous study ECF 08/2011). Caging experiments will be conducted in the field to quantify coral damage and external bioerosion caused by the sea urchin Diadema setosum, and to examine how such effects are remediated by the predatory crab Thalamita prymna.
