Project Title: Development of a rapid screening protocol to identify shark fins from endangered species

Applicant: Prof Pang-chui Shaw, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Total Approved Grant: $986,969

Duration: 1/6/2016 to 31/5/2018

Project Status/Remarks: On-going

This project aims to devise a rapid molecular method for on-site identification of shark fins based on species-specific amplification and instant detection. DNA extraction protocols will be first optimized. Specific primers will be designed for both conventional species-specific polymerase chain reaction and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). LAMP is an isothermal amplification technique with impressive specificity, efficiency and rapidity. It does not require thermal cycler for amplification and is suitable for field detection. Different instant detection methods, rather than conventional gel electrophoresis, will be performed and compared. An optimal method will be devised afterwards.
