Project Title: Application of Quartz Crystal Micro-balance (QCM) for the measurements of acidic ultrafine particles in the atmosphere

Project Status/Remarks: On-going

The purpose of the proposal is to develop a novel online method to quantify the number concentration of acidic ultrafine particles in the air. The specific scientific objectives are:

1. To use the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) to develop a nanofilm detector for the collection of ambient acidic ultrafine particles;
2. To design an ultrafine diffusion sampler (DS) with high collection efficiency and online measurement in which the nanofilm detector can be connected to the QCM and be placed for sampling;
3. To inter-compare the acidic ultrafine particle levels and collected efficiency measured by the newly developed QCM DS with those measured by the commercially available electrical precipitation sampler and the first-generation DS; and
4. To carry out field measurements at roadside and residential sites in Hong Kong to assess the reliability and efficiency of the ultrafine particle samplers.
