This project is intended to be the Phase II of an earlier project funded by the ECF, viz., ECF 02/2007 “Easy identification of dinoflagellates: Phase I rapid identification of dinoflagellates with protein/peptide mass fingerprints obtained using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry”. The Phase I project has demonstrated that protein/peptide mass expression fingerprints (PEFs) could be a fast method to identify toxic dinoflagellates. However, the down side of the PEFs technique is the requirement for large capital-investment and high maintenance cost for the instruments. To rectify this drawback, the present proposed Phase II project aims to develop a simple and portable immunoassay for fast identification of toxic dinoflagellates based on results of the PEFs obtained from Phase I. Representative protein biomarkers of each type of toxic dinoflagellates will be identified. Artificial peptides of these protein biomarkers will raise antibodies for fabrication of a simple immunoassay for identification of toxic dinoflagellates.
