Scope: To investigate the possibility of using recycled glass in cement production in Hong Kong so as to reduce the solid waste dumping in the landfills.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes: A total of 32 types of waste glass were analyzed using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with regard to their chemical centents and suitability for use in cement production. The findings suggest that waste glass may be used in cement production either by adding it to the materials feed charge for the production of the clinker that goes to make cement or by mixing it with cement as a filler. The resulting product will have a quality that meets the standard specified in American Society of Testing and Materials. Environmental Protection Department will assist in conducting trial runs with a cement company.
