Project Title: Development of a CD-ROM Database for Common Bird Species in Hong Kong

Applicant: City University of Hong Kong

Total Approved Grant: $115,570

Duration: 01/12/95 to 31/08/97

Project Status/Remarks: Completed

Scope: To establish a CD-ROM database for common bird species in Hong Kong based on real-life images recorded by a specially-modified video camera.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes: Hong Kong's first CD-ROM database of Common Birds Species in Hong Kong was developed. Using a video camera coupled with a telescope, the video picture of 278 bird species in Hong Kong had been taken. The call and song of more than 1090 bird-species were also recorded. Based on the collected information, an electronic book (field guide) in CD format was produced. IBM-PC format was used so that the content could be read by most common personal computers. It had been published by the Hong Kong Conservancy Association and could be available from their office, WWFHK Mai Po Souvenir Shop and the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society. The Hong Kong Conservancy Association had sent one free copy to every secondary school in Hong Kong.
