Asia Pacific Conference on Science and Management of Coastal Environment

Project Title: Asia Pacific Conference on Science and Management of Coastal Environment

Applicant: The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Total Approved Grant: $100,000

Duration: 25/06/96 to 28/06/96

Project Status/Remarks: Completed

Scope: To provide a scientific forum for local researchers to interact within their peers in Hong Kong and from overseas through presentation of their findings and exchanging ideas in the area of coastal environment with specific stress on the Asia-Pacific region.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes: 231 scientists and scholars from 24 countries and areas participated at the Conference. 15 plenary keynote lectures, 17 symposia in 3 parallel sessions with 75 oral presentations, and 92 presentations by poster display had been presented on areas of coastal ecology, pollution, marine biotechnology, and coastal management during the 3-day Conference. One single piece of evidence - that 75% of the population of the world will live in the coastal zone by the year 2010 - demonstrated the need for scientists to work closely with planners and developers, in the shared objective of achieving the proper consideration of cultural, social, environmental and economic issues in sustainable development.
