Re ECF Project: ECF 2016-27

Project Title: In-situ regulation of hydrogen sulfide and methane production from Anaerobic digester

Applicant: Dr. Parthiba Karthikeyan OBULSAMY, Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment Hong Kong Baptist University

Total Approved Grant: $499,620

Duration: 1/3/2017 to 30/4/2018

Project Status/Remarks: On-going

Scope:
This research aims to fine tune the sulfate reduction pathway during the anaerobic digestion (AD) of saline-sulfate rich sewage sludge by altering the biogas pressure within the digester. The proposed alternate approach will lead to reduce the hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and increase the methane percentages in biogas, while the calorific value will be significantly improved. Eventually, any additional treatment costs for H2S removal/treatment from biogas will be minimized and digestion efficiency upregulated to accommodate more organic materials (e.g. food waste) with high methane (CH4) yield.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes:
To be available upon completion of the project
