Re ECF Project: 2010-15

Project Title: “Green is the New Cool” Forum and Master classes: Designing for a Low Carbon Life in a Creative, Actionable and Affordable

Applicant: Dr. LAM Yan Yan of Hong Kong Design Institute

Total Approved Grant: $500,000

Duration: 1/3/ 2011 to 30/11/2011

Project Status/Remarks: Completed

Scope:
The project aims to promote a behavioural change in Hong Kong towards a lower carbon consumption life through sustainable design and innovation. There will be a series of events including a one-day public forum, two half-day master classes for professionals, one two-day master class for tertiary students and an applied research study on sustainable design and innovation.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes:
Through the Green Project, the project team concluded that there are three key factors for transforming Hong Kong into a sustainable city:

  • Communicate green living in a way that is relevant and beneficial to different stakeholders- for business (focusing on business value) and members of the public (focusing on human values, attitudes, lifestyle, habits, etc.);
  • The Government could map out a strategic policy framework to build the enabling environment for a green living (e.g. infrastructure for waste disposal, recycling, technology, building and product regulations, etc.); and
  • Education plays a vital role. Top-down interventions cannot be implemented effectively without the support of educated and informed citizens. Sustainability should be built into the educational curriculum at all levels using a multi-disciplinary approach.
Several potential solutions are presented in the Green Agenda derived from the Professional Caucus (roundtable discussions). These include:
  • Collaboration amongst different stakeholders and starting with small scale pilot community projects;
  • Identifying and investing in green business and market opportunities;
  • A benefit-driven marketing communications approach; and
  • Encouraging a more extensive and strategic use of design in communicating and implementing green projects and in realizing the business/market opportunities.
