Project Title: Antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes in potable water and soil environment of Hong Kong

Project Status/Remarks: Completed

Scope:
To screen the potable water along the water course of the East River via Shenzhen to Hong Kong, in the treatment plants (representing before and after treatment), and sludge in Hong Kong environments for the presence of antibiotics. Besides, the probable antibiotic resistant genes present in the sludge will also be determined. Possible implications of the contamination will be evaluated in Hong Kong human health perspectives.

Summary of the Findings/Outcomes:
The project successfully developed and fully validated an LC-MS/MS analytical method for the determination of antibiotics residues in waters. The developed method was used determine the occurrence of residues in water and selected sludge samples collected from various locations in Dongjiang, local reservoirs and from residential areas. In addition, the antibiotics resistance gene profiles were retrieved.

On top of fulfilling all the above project objectives, the project has also extended the work to cover:

  • occurrence of residues in local rivers; and
  • more household water samples originated from the four target reservoirs were collected and analysed for target residues.
